We are all faced with choices, every minute of every day. Most have little consequence, like choosing bacon or sausage or what shirt to wear. Others, however, shape our lives in profound ways, like whether to quit or push forward.

Sir Colin R. Davis was an English conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra. He claimed that “The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same.” He was right. Both paths are filled with choices, risks, setbacks, and opportunity, but only one leaves room for excuses.

Excuses come easily and often protect us from facing failure. We say it was someone else’s fault, that we weren’t told, that we didn’t really want it, or that we were too “fill in the blank” to succeed.

People will invent almost anything to explain why they fall short and blame the world for holding them back. Sometimes, that world really does push against us. That moment is the fork in the road. Winners see setbacks as part of the journey and keep moving forward. Others see the same obstacles as permission to stop.

But look beyond that room and you will see another path still open. A plane is ready to take off with only a few people stepping forward. They faced the same challenges and chose not to give up. It’s not too late to join them.

Leave the comfort behind and move toward that gate. The road will be difficult and full of setbacks, but it leads somewhere meaningful. Ignore the voices calling you back and keep going.

Drop the excuses, accept the struggle, and take pride in each small victory. Success is not a single moment, but the result of choosing again and again to continue when it would be easier to stop. Your progress will build strength and confidence over time, and each step forward will make the next one easier. Stay focused on the direction you want your life to go and refuse to turn back.
